Avonia House Rules
These house rules apply only when running a campaign in the Avonia campaign setting, although most will still be used when running a different campaign world.
Character Creation
- Characters roll 4d6 and drop the lowest die 6 times to generate character stats as per the standard method.
- If the total of your stats is greater than 90 then the character is considered too strong and the stats must be discarded.
- If the total of your modifiers is less than 2 or if your highest score is a 14 you should consider not using those stats.
- While not a steadfast rule, rolling multiple sets of stats is frowned upon and should not be done.
- All PCs starting at 1st level will start with the maximum gold for 1st level instead of rolling to determine starting funds.
- Players who make their first character for a campaign at a later point than the first session will start at a level equal to the party average.
- Players who bring in a new character after a character death or who simply wish to switch characters start at a level equal to either the highest level PC's level - 2 or the lowest level PC's level - 1, whichever is not as harsh.
- Players may choose any core classes, including those found in the Complete series and the Expanded Psionic's Handbook.
Character Advancement
- Once a character takes levels in a prestige class he or she is restricted from taking any class levels of a class other than the current prestige class or base classes until all levels in the prestige class are taken.
- Gestalt characters who progress with a special ability that causes them to loose a hit die for a level may take no class levels in anything other than the progression that causes them to loose a hit die.
Combat
- Instead of opponents making attack rolls, PCs will make defense rolls. In order for PC to dodge an opponent's attack the player must roll a d20 and add his or her armor modifier to the roll (which is your total armor class - 10). If that number is equal to or greater than the opponent's attack modifier +11 then the PC defends against the attack. Under this system, players that roll a 1 on the defense roll must roll again to defend against a critical hit.
- On an attack roll a result of a 1 is an automatic miss. There is no extended critical failure system.
Resources
- The DM reserves the right to deny any rule for any reason, reguadless of circumstance or beliefs.
- Generally, all items or links to resources listed on the campaign site are available for use in the campaign.
- Material from other d20 books will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This evaluation may consist of examining the rules for similar effects or methods and for basic tone and flavor.
- All rules (especially prestige classes) with a particular hook in another setting will be modified to suit the campaign world.
- As a general rule, don't be afraid to present a rule, feat, item, prestige class or any other item for use in the campaign world. Avonia is like a sandbox.
Prohibited Material
- Anything dealing with action points.
- Anything dealing with dragon marks.
